AI that answers to the balance sheet.

Scipio Consulting helps boards and executive teams turn artificial intelligence into measured gains in cost, revenue and risk. Each use case gets a baseline, a named owner and a control before it goes live. No hype. No orphan pilots.

The problem

Most organisations use AI. Few can show what it earns.

39%

of organisations report any EBIT impact from AI, while 88% use it in at least one function.

McKinsey, State of AI 2025 ↗
95%

of generative AI pilots stall before they reach scaled adoption with measurable returns.

MIT NANDA, GenAI Divide 2025 ↗
40%+

of agentic AI projects will be cancelled by the end of 2027, because of cost and unclear value.

Gartner prediction, 2025 ↗
97%

of organisations with an AI-related breach did not have AI access controls in place.

IBM, Cost of a Data Breach 2025 ↗

The gap is not the model. It is the operating discipline around it.

AI value comes from redesigned workflows, clean data, clear ownership and controls that let you scale with confidence. High performers are nearly three times more likely to redesign workflows than to bolt AI onto old ones.

I have spent two decades building digital infrastructure across Africa: networks, data centres, cloud platforms, policy and regulation. Scipio applies that same engineering and governance discipline to AI.

  • Measure firstNo use case starts without a baseline and a target that finance agrees with.
  • Name an ownerA business owner signs for the benefit. IT and security sign for the controls.
  • Govern before you scaleNo scale decision without measurable controls and the support capacity to run it.
  • Use the simplest tool that worksStart with what you already licence. Build custom only when the case needs it.

The Scipio method

Five phases. Controls mature before autonomy increases.

We sequence productivity, data, agents and operational AI so that each step funds and de-risks the next. You can start at any phase. The diagnostic below tells you where.

Core services

Four ways we turn AI into results.

Each service ends with something you can measure. We agree the measure with you before work starts.

For boards and executives

AI Strategy Consulting

We find where AI will move your numbers, rank the opportunities by value and risk, and build a funded roadmap your board can approve.

What you get

  • AI readiness assessment across seven domains
  • Ranked use-case portfolio with benefit cases
  • AI governance charter and operating model
  • 12 to 18 month roadmap with investment gates
4–8 weeksvalue pipelinepayback period

For product and operations leaders

Custom AI Product Development

We design and build AI assistants, agents and apps that use your own data, with security, evaluation and cost controls built in from the first sprint.

What you get

  • Architecture on your platform: Microsoft, AWS or open models
  • Retrieval with citations and permission-aware answers
  • Evaluation harness for quality, safety and cost
  • Production release with monitoring and runbooks
6–14 weeks to productiontask timeaccuracy

For finance, HR, service and IT teams

Workflow Automation

We redesign a process end to end, then automate the steps that repeat. Agents propose. People approve high-impact actions. Every action leaves an audit trail.

What you get

  • Process mapping and baseline time study
  • Agent flows linked to ERP, CRM, PMS and ITSM
  • Human approval points and segregation of duties
  • Adoption plan, training and benefit tracking
30–90 day sprintshours releasedcycle time

For investors, lenders and acquirers

Technical Due Diligence

We test whether a target's technology, data and AI claims will hold up. You get a clear view of risk, scalability and the cost to fix gaps, in time for your investment decision.

What you get

  • Architecture, security and data-rights review
  • AI capability check: real product or wrapper
  • Market and technical risk scoring
  • Red-flag report and 100-day value plan
2–6 weeksrisk exposureremediation cost

Governance and assurance practice

Trust and governance

Trust is a design requirement, not a disclaimer.

We design permissions, security, data protection and human accountability into every layer of the AI stack. Select a layer to see what we control there.

  • Recommendation firstFor sensitive or high-impact actions, AI recommends and an authorised person approves. We keep the approval and audit evidence.
  • Least privilege, alwaysAI sees only what the signed-in user may see. Agents get their own identities with limited rights.
  • Data stays where the law saysWe map residency and cross-border transfer rules before we choose a model, a region or a vendor.
  • Evaluate, then monitorWe test for accuracy, bias, leakage and prompt injection before launch, then watch quality, cost and threats in production.
  • Fair and explainableAnswers cite their sources. People affected by an AI decision can ask how it was made and get a human review.

How we handle your data

  • We sign a confidentiality agreement before discovery starts.
  • We work inside your tenant and your controls where possible.
  • We never put your data into public AI tools.
  • We never use your data to train models for anyone else.
  • We record what data we hold, why, and for how long.
  • We return or delete your data at the end of the engagement.

Our experience

Built on 21 years of making technology work in Africa.

Thomas Makau

Founder and Principal Consultant

"I have spent my career turning new technology into infrastructure that people rely on. AI is the same job with higher stakes. It must be useful, safe and paid for by the value it creates."

Thomas started as a network engineer in the early days of the Kenyan internet. He went on to lead operations for East Africa's largest data carrier, build a satellite ISP's technology function as founding CTO, and advise governments, regulators, multilaterals and enterprises across the continent.

Today he leads IT security and governance projects for a pan-African hotel group, trains national regulators on AI for the ITU, and teaches cloud and digital transformation on LinkedIn Learning.
